Conquering Dizziness: Vestibular Physiotherapy Exercises that Truly Work

Pembina Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic • July 21, 2026

Do you ever experience unsteadiness, spinning sensations, or unexplained dizziness that make everyday activities challenging? If so, you’re not alone. Dizziness and balance problems are surprisingly common and can affect people of all ages, limiting confidence and quality of life. At Pembina Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic in Winnipeg, we specialize in vestibular physiotherapy—a proven approach for conquering dizziness and helping you get back to living fully. Today, we’re sharing expert insights and exercises you can try, and why seeking professional guidance is key to lasting relief.

Understanding Dizziness and the Vestibular System

The vestibular system is a key part of your inner ear and brain. It controls balance, eye movements, and your sense of spatial orientation. When something goes wrong—such as with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, concussion, or age-related changes—you may feel dizzy, unsteady, or even nauseated. Common symptoms include vertigo (spinning), imbalance, lightheadedness, difficulty focusing, or feeling like the room is moving.

While occasional dizziness is usually harmless, persistent or severe symptoms should never be ignored. Vestibular physiotherapy is a non-invasive, evidence-based treatment that targets the root cause, not just the symptoms.

What Is Vestibular Physiotherapy?

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialized type of rehabilitation that helps retrain your brain and body to compensate for vestibular dysfunction. At Pembina Physiotherapy, our skilled therapists perform a thorough assessment to determine the cause and create a personalized plan. Treatment may include hands-on techniques, education, and—most importantly—targeted exercises designed to reduce dizziness, restore balance, and build confidence in your everyday life.

Vestibular Exercises That Really Work

A customized exercise program is the cornerstone of successful vestibular physiotherapy. Here are some key exercises our Winnipeg patients often benefit from:

1. Gaze Stabilization (VOR x1)

This exercise improves your ability to focus on an object while moving your head—a common difficulty with vestibular issues.

How to do it: Hold a target (like your thumb or a post-it note) at eye level. Keeping your eyes fixed on the target, slowly and gently move your head side to side. Start with 10-15 seconds, rest, and repeat several times. As you improve, try moving your head up and down as well.

2. Balance Training

Improving your balance is essential for fall prevention and confidence.

How to do it: Start by standing with your feet together near a sturdy surface for support. Progress to standing on one leg, then try closing your eyes or standing on a softer surface. Always ensure safety by keeping a chair or counter nearby.

3. Habituation Movements

If certain positions trigger your dizziness, gradual exposure can help your brain adapt.

How to do it: Identify movements or positions that bring on mild symptoms (like looking up, turning your head, or bending over). Slowly repeat these motions, resting as needed, to help your system get used to them. Over time, the dizziness should decrease.

4. Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers (for BPPV)

For those with BPPV (the most common cause of vertigo), specialized maneuvers such as the Epley or Brandt-Daroff can move tiny crystals in your inner ear back to their correct position.

Note: These should only be performed under the guidance of a trained physiotherapist to ensure proper technique and safety.
