About Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialized form of physiotherapy that focuses on treating conditions related to balance and dizziness.

At Pembina Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, we offer vestibular physiotherapy to help patients manage a range of vestibular disorders. Our trained therapists use a variety of techniques to improve balance, reduce dizziness, and enhance overall quality of life.

  • How It Works

Vestibular physiotherapy involves a thorough assessment and treatment of the vestibular system, which is responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation.

Treatment may include specific exercises to improve balance, eye-head coordination, and spatial orientation. The goal is to help the brain adapt to changes in the vestibular system and reduce symptoms of dizziness and imbalance.

  • Benefits of Vestibular Physiotherapy

The benefits of vestibular physiotherapy are extensive. It can help to reduce symptoms of dizziness, improve balance, enhance spatial orientation, and improve overall function. By addressing the root cause of these symptoms, vestibular physiotherapy can significantly enhance quality of life for individuals with vestibular disorders.

  • Who Is It For

Vestibular physiotherapy can be highly beneficial for individuals diagnosed with various vestibular disorders, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, and Ménière’s disease. The therapy can also be of benefit to those experiencing a drop in balance or an increase in dizziness or falls. Vestibular rehabilitation, depending on the diagnosis, may include balance training, gaze stability training, and canalith repositioning maneuvers. As always, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional to discuss your health history and current status before commencing any treatment. Our therapists conduct a comprehensive assessment to ascertain if vestibular physiotherapy is the appropriate treatment approach for you.

Types of Vestibular Rehabilitation Exercises

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of therapy designed to alleviate primary and secondary problems caused by vestibular disorders. It is an exercise-based program primarily designed to reduce vertigo and dizziness, gaze instability, and/or imbalance and falls. At Pembina Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, our trained therapists utilize a range of exercises to improve balance, reduce dizziness, and enhance overall quality of life.

  • Habituation Exercises

Habituation exercises are designed for patients who experience dizziness from self-motion and visual stimuli. The goal of these exercises is to reduce the dizziness through repeated exposure to specific movements or visual stimuli that provoke patients' dizziness. The exercises are designed to provoke the dizziness which leads to decreased dizziness over time as the body learns to ignore the abnormal signals it is receiving from the inner ear.

  • Gaze Stabilization Exercises

Gaze stabilization exercises are used to improve control of eye movements so vision can be clear during head movement. These exercises are often used for patients with bilateral vestibular loss (BVL) and unilateral vestibular loss (UVL) who report problems seeing clearly because their visual world appears to bounce or jump around, such as when reading or when trying to identify objects in the environment, especially when moving about.

  • Balance Training Exercises

Balance training exercises are used to improve steadiness so that daily activities for self-care, work, and leisure can be performed successfully. Exercises used in balance training can change the surface or the base of support, include different stances, and may include a concurrent cognitive or motor task.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Pembina Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, we understand that you may have questions about vestibular physiotherapy, especially if you're considering it for the first time. We believe in empowering our clients with knowledge to make informed decisions about their health. To help you understand more about vestibular physiotherapy, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions. These cover a range of topics from what to expect during a session to the benefits of vestibular physiotherapy. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us.

  • What can I expect during a vestibular physiotherapy session?

During a vestibular physiotherapy session, our trained therapists will first conduct a thorough assessment. This includes discussing your health history, current symptoms, and goals for therapy. They may also perform specific tests to assess your balance and spatial orientation.

Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment plan will be developed. This plan may include a variety of treatments such as balance exercises, eye-head coordination exercises, and other techniques, depending on your specific needs and goals.

  • Is vestibular physiotherapy safe?

Vestibular physiotherapy is generally safe and non-invasive. However, some people may experience temporary dizziness or imbalance during the treatment. This is a normal part of the process as your brain learns to adapt to changes in the vestibular system.

Our therapists are trained to ensure your safety during the session and will monitor your response to the treatment. If you have any concerns about the safety of vestibular physiotherapy, it's important to discuss them with your therapist.

  • How many vestibular physiotherapy sessions will I need

The number of vestibular physiotherapy sessions required can vary greatly depending on your specific condition and treatment goals.

Some conditions may see significant improvement after just a few sessions, while others may require ongoing treatment over several weeks or months.

After your initial assessment, your therapist will discuss a proposed treatment plan with you and provide an estimate of the number of sessions needed.

  • Can vestibular physiotherapy help with motion sickness?

Yes, vestibular physiotherapy can be beneficial for individuals who experience motion sickness. Motion sickness occurs when there's a conflict between what your eyes see and what your inner ears sense.

Vestibular physiotherapy can help improve the function of the vestibular system, reducing symptoms of dizziness and imbalance that can contribute to motion sickness.
