About Post Op Hip & Knee Classes

At Pembina Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, we're excited to offer a class specifically designed for individuals who have undergone a hip or knee replacement on or since January 1, 2023.

This program includes 10 classes, beginning with a one-on-one assessment by a physiotherapist to evaluate your current status, discuss the details of the exercise class, and establish goals. The remaining nine classes focus on exercises and education to support your recovery and improve your joint function.

  • How It Works

The program starts approximately 2-3 weeks after your surgery, with classes led by a licensed physiotherapist. Each class lasts for an hour and is held twice a week.

The classes are designed to help you regain strength, mobility, and confidence in your new joint. The program is fully funded by Manitoba Health, making it accessible for those without private physiotherapy coverage.

  • Benefits of Post Op Hip & Knee Class

Participating in our Post Op Hip & Knee Class can significantly enhance your recovery process. The classes provide a structured environment where you can safely exercise under the guidance of a professional physiotherapist.

The exercises are designed to improve strength, flexibility, and balance, helping you regain normal function in your hip or knee. Additionally, the classes offer an opportunity to connect with others who are going through a similar recovery process, providing a supportive and motivating environment.

  • Who Is It For

This program is ideal for individuals who have undergone a total hip or knee replacement or revision, as well as unicompartmental knee replacements, on or since January 1, 2023.

For those who prefer private sessions, Manitoba Health will provide six individual treatments in lieu of the 10 classes, provided the individual does not have private insurance for physiotherapy or has exhausted all private insurance coverage for physiotherapy.

Types of Exercises

Exercise plays a crucial role in recovery and rehabilitation following hip or knee replacement surgery. At Pembina Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, our hip and knee classes incorporate a variety of exercises designed to improve strength, flexibility, and balance. These exercises are tailored to each individual's needs and abilities, ensuring a safe and effective recovery process. Here are some common types of exercises that may be included in our classes.

  • Balance

Balance exercises are a critical part of our post-operative classes. They involve activities designed to improve the patient's ability to maintain equilibrium. Balance is crucial for basic activities such as standing and walking. As individuals recover from hip or knee surgery, these exercises aid in strengthening the muscles that stabilize their joints, reducing the risk of falls, enhancing coordination, and promoting safer mobility.

  • Proprioception

Proprioceptive exercises aim to enhance an individual's awareness of their body's position and movements. After a hip or knee replacement, patients often face a challenge in relearning how their new joint moves. Improving proprioception helps the brain better communicate with the joint, promoting smoother and more confident movements. This awareness is essential in navigating different terrains and performing more complex activities, ultimately enhancing overall mobility.

  • Strengthening

Strengthening exercises in our post-operative classes are designed to build up the muscles supporting the replaced hip or knee. Strong muscles are crucial in supporting the new joint, relieving strain, optimizing function, and enabling daily activities. Over time, these exercises can also help increase endurance, allowing patients to engage in activities for longer periods without fatigue.

  • Range of Motion

Range of motion exercises are crucial for regaining flexibility after surgery. These exercises target the joint's ability to move through its full capacity, from fully extended to fully bent positions. By improving the range of motion post-surgery, patients can achieve a more normal gait pattern, avoid joint stiffness, and perform daily tasks more efficiently.

  • What can I expect during a post op hip and knee class?

Our post op hip and knee classes are designed to support your recovery and improve your joint function following surgery. Each class is led by a licensed physiotherapist and lasts for an hour. The class begins with a warm-up, followed by a series of exercises tailored to your needs and abilities.

These exercises focus on improving strength, flexibility, and balance. You'll also receive education on understanding your condition, managing pain, and preventing future injuries. Our therapists are always on hand to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the class. They will provide guidance and modifications as needed, ensuring that each exercise is performed correctly and effectively.

  • Do I need any special equipment for the class?

No special equipment is required for our post op hip and knee classes. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement and supportive shoes. All other equipment needed for the exercises, such as resistance bands or exercise balls, will be provided at the clinic.

If you have any specific needs or concerns, please discuss them with your therapist before the class. Our goal is to make the classes accessible and beneficial for everyone, regardless of their current fitness level or physical abilities.

  • How soon after my surgery can I start the class?

We typically recommend starting the post op hip and knee classes approximately 2-3 weeks after your surgery. This allows for initial healing to take place. However, the exact timing can vary depending on your individual recovery progress and your surgeon's recommendations.

Your therapist will conduct a thorough assessment to determine the appropriate time for you to start the classes. They will take into account factors such as your pain levels, range of motion, and overall health status.

  • What if I prefer private sessions?

For those individuals that would prefer private sessions, Manitoba Health will provide six individual treatments in lieu of the 10 classes. To be eligible, the individual must not have private insurance for physiotherapy or have exhausted all private insurance coverage for physiotherapy.
